GTA 6: how long is the story, and what the 80 hours cover
Rockstar Games has never published a story length for Grand Theft Auto VI. The 80 hours in circulation since August 27, 2026 come from one developer's playthrough, optional goals included, and every figure compared here says what it measures.
GTA6 LIFE

Rockstar Games has published no story length for Grand Theft Auto VI, and the 80 hours quoted everywhere since August 27, 2026 is not one. It is how long Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, took to finish his own playthrough, in February 2026. The New York Times reported it that day after being hosted at the studio, and wrote that the run covered the main story plus “some optional goals with narrative ramifications”.
That qualifier belongs to the newspaper. Nelson never said the main story runs 80 hours: he described one playthrough, his own, by someone who knows where everything sits and has never had to hunt an objective on a map. Clubic’s French write-up of the same interview, published August 28, 2026, has him calling the game very, very immersive and long. The original English wording sits behind the paper’s subscription wall.
The table, one category per line
HowLongToBeat sorts player-submitted times into separate buckets, and two different buckets do not compare. So every line here states what it measures.
| Game | What is measured | Time | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 | one developer’s full playthrough: main story plus optional goals with narrative ramifications | about 80 hours | Rob Nelson, February 2026, via The New York Times, August 27, 2026 |
| GTA V | main story only, player average | 32 hours | HowLongToBeat, cited by TheGamer, August 28, 2026 |
| GTA V | main story plus some of the side content | 51.5 hours | HowLongToBeat, cited by Clubic, August 28, 2026 |
| GTA V | completionist run | a little under 90 hours | HowLongToBeat, cited by TheGamer, August 28, 2026 |
| GTA IV | main story only | 27 hours | HowLongToBeat, cited by TheGamer, August 28, 2026 |
| GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas combined | main stories only | 64 hours | HowLongToBeat, cited by TheGamer, August 28, 2026 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | main story only | about 50 hours | HowLongToBeat, as read by Dexerto |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | length the studio announced before release | 65 hours | Dan Houser, 2018, via TechRadar |
The first line is the only one that does not come from an aggregate of player times. It comes from one person, on one run, and it already blends two buckets HowLongToBeat keeps apart. The other seven rest on thousands of finished playthroughs, logged since 2013 for GTA V and since 2018 for Red Dead Redemption 2.
One sentence, two multipliers
TheGamer’s August 28, 2026 piece is headlined on the main story taking around 80 hours. It states that Nelson’s run was “almost entirely dedicated to the game’s main story” and concludes that an ordinary playthrough will pass 100 hours. Held against the 32 hours of GTA V’s main story, that gives a ratio of 2.5.
The French site Clubic started from the same New York Times sentence the same day and read it the other way, writing that the 80 hours mentioned by Nelson do not necessarily match the time needed to finish the game, and that players focused on the campaign will hit the credits well before. Clubic compared against 51.5 hours, GTA V’s main story plus some side content. The ratio drops to 1.55.
Both GTA V numbers come from the same aggregator. Only the bucket changes, and that alone moves GTA 6 from half again as long to two and a half times as long. Neither TheGamer nor Clubic holds an element the other lacks. How the number travelled from the New York Times piece of August 27, 2026 to the headlines of the next day is traced in our news piece on the 80-hour playthrough.

Three systems that push the hours up
Money comes first. IGN, at point 51 of the 69 details it published on August 27, 2026, writes that money matters more to the story than in previous GTA games, and that you will sometimes need to raise a certain sum before the main mission flow resumes. Point 52 lists the ways: stealing and reselling cars, robbing businesses, robbing stores, pulling bank heists. None of that is filler. It gates the plot.

The relationship comes second, and it is not built inside missions. Nelson told IGN that “just going through the story and playing missions together may not be enough to keep them together”. Keeping Jason and Lucia close means time spent as a pair in the open world: exploring Leonida, shopping, the barber, working out, pool, mini golf, robberies done together. That time unlocks nothing mechanical. IGN spells it out at point 8, where it notes there is no gameplay benefit to building a strong relationship. The hours go on the clock and nowhere else. How the two systems behave, and what Rockstar has said about opting out, sits in our guide to the Jason and Lucia bond.
Exploration comes third. Rockstar says it has blurred the line between open-world activity and main missions, and designed the story to reward time spent in the world rather than a straight run down the mission list. Nelson draws the comparison with 2018 himself: “If you take a bit of time and explore you will be rewarded, a lot.” On a map Nelson described elsewhere the same day as three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, a ratio weighed in our piece on the map size, detours cost real hours.
What Rockstar still has not said
No mission count has been announced. No chapter count either, and no chapter names, even though the chapter structure itself has been established since June 24, 2026 by Rockstar’s own store page: the Ultimate Edition bonuses are spread across the whole of Jason and Lucia’s story, “with new items uncovered behind each chapter”.
Nothing has been said about multiple endings. Nelson goes as far as saying the state of the relationship “will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out”, without indicating whether that means variant scenes, variant dialogue or a variant ending.
No script length has been given, where Dan Houser put a 2,000-page figure on Red Dead Redemption 2 before release. No story expansion has been announced. And the only public footage remains the Extended Look of August 27, 2026, built around three missions drawn from different portions of the game, detailed in our piece on the Extended Look. Nelson has not said which chapter any of the three belongs to.
