GTA 6 hardware: the $579.98 floor and what sits above it
Console builds of GTA 6 run at 30 frames per second, according to Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson. That single line deletes half of the usual shopping list and puts the November 19, 2026 floor at $579.98, on an Xbox Series S.
GTA6 LIFE

Starting from nothing, the cheapest way to play Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 is $579.98: an Xbox Series S 512 GB at $499.99, the US price Microsoft applied on August 1, 2026, plus the Standard edition at $79.99. The best documented route costs $100 more. Everything above that is a trade-off, and part of it buys nothing at all.
What sets this budget is not the price of the boxes. It is a remark by Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, reported on August 27, 2026 by Brazilian creator Davy Jones and carried by Kotaku: console builds run at 30 frames per second at this stage of development, on every machine. Rockstar Games has published nothing of its own on frame rate, and Nelson said he would have to check with the technical team.
Digital Foundry, on August 28, 2026, called a 60fps version “extremely unlikely on console hardware”. Thirty frames per second means 33.3 ms per frame, and that number decides half the lines below. The chain of transmission sits in our piece on the 30fps remark.
Two line items that leave the budget
The disc drive goes first. Rockstar states it on its own store page: “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.” A code, not a disc. So the $50 between a PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99 and a PS5 with a drive at $649.99 buys nothing here, and neither does the $50 between an Xbox Series X Digital at $749.99 and the same machine with a drive at $799.99.
Refresh rate goes second. The PS5’s VRR window runs from 48 to 120 Hz. At 30 frames per second the game sits under that floor, and only Low Framerate Compensation catches it, by repeating each frame, which requires a natively 120 Hz panel. A 40fps mode, 25 ms per frame, would divide cleanly into a 120 Hz cadence. None has been announced on any console, PS5 Pro included.

Three tiers, with a date on every price

One catch, and it is a real one. Of the 512 GB on the box, a June 29, 2026 estimate from Stealthy Gaming puts about 364 GB in reach, and Rockstar has published no install size for GTA 6 on any platform. In the same June 25 statement where it raised that console by $100, Microsoft called the Series S “the lowest-cost way for console players to enjoy the biggest hits this year”, naming Grand Theft Auto VI among them.

Console and game alone come to $679.98. The Extended Look was captured on a base PS5, Sony’s June 24, 2026 post attaches four hardware features to the game, DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker and Tempest 3D audio, and no other machine has been shown running it. The third line is optional, and the section below explains why it is also the least trustworthy figure on this page.

The $300 gap between a PS5 Pro and a PS5 Digital Edition does not buy fluidity. Digital Foundry wrote on June 29, 2026 that the Pro offers only a fractional CPU gain over the base PS5, its lead coming from the GPU, ray tracing acceleration and PSSR, none of which hands back the CPU time a 16.7 ms frame would need. No footage of GTA 6 running on a PS5 Pro has been shown publicly.
The lines this guide will not price in dollars
There is no US retail reading here for a television, a headset, a controller or an Xbox expansion card. European readings from August 2026 exist for all four, and they sit in the French edition. Converting them would produce a number no American reader could walk into a store and check.
Two things about a screen cost nothing anyway. HDMI 2.1 carries 48 Gbps against 18 Gbps for HDMI 2.0, which is what gates 4K at 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM, and Frandroid pointed out on June 19, 2026 that many sets ship with their inputs in a Standard mode that blocks that full bandwidth until the owner switches the signal format. LG and Samsung offer it on all four inputs, Sony only on certain ranges. That is a setting, not a purchase. The model question belongs in our TV guide.
What no panel will fix is the rest of Digital Foundry’s August 28 read: internal rendering around 1440p on PS5, pushed to 4K by a plain spatial upscale, with geometric aliasing and shimmering on fine detail. A larger, sharper screen makes those artifacts easier to see, not harder.

Storage, the bill nobody can quote
Rockstar has published no install size, on any platform, as of August 28, 2026. What is known is the space left over: roughly 667 GB usable on a launch PS5 according to Frandroid’s guide updated August 26, 2026, and by Stealthy Gaming’s June 29, 2026 estimate, about 802 GB on a 1 TB Xbox Series X and about 364 GB on a Series S. The reasoning is laid out in our storage guide.
The PS5’s M.2 slot takes any NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive meeting Sony’s criteria: 5,500 MB/s sequential read recommended, heatsink mandatory, 250 GB to 8 TB. Official licensing changes none of that. Games.gg made the point on June 18, 2026, days after the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P line landed at $379.99 for 1 TB and $2,959.99 for 8 TB, the top model discounted from a $3,699.99 list price.
Put the 8 TB next to a WD_Black SN850X of the same capacity, from the same parent company. Digital Foundry recalled it selling at $600 the year before, and Notebookcheck found it at $1,299.99 on Amazon in June 2026. Microsoft wrote the cause into its price update on June 25, 2026: “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027”. Kioxia had already told Les Numériques in January 2026 that its entire 2026 NAND output was booked, and its executive Shunsuke Nakato said at a Seoul industry summit that the cheap 1 TB drive, roughly 70 euros in Europe, is behind us.
What not to buy
The disc drive, in any of its forms, including the add-on a PS5 Pro owner would need for physical media this game will never use. The 8 TB licensed SSD, at more than three PS5 Pro consoles for a slot that accepts a cheaper drive. And a PS5 Pro bought for frame rate, since Nelson’s remark covers it like the others.
Pre-load opens on November 12, 2026 at midnight local time, for boxed codes and digital pre-orders alike. Clearing the space first is free. Our setup comparator adds these lines up in the order they actually get decided.
