GTA 6: Digital Foundry's praise, and the paragraph nobody ran

Digital Foundry published its Extended Look analysis on August 28, 2026, and the roundups kept the compliments. The same text describes softness, visible geometric aliasing, shimmer on fine details and noisy ray-traced reflections.

Digital Foundry published its analysis of “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” on August 28, 2026, and only the compliments travelled. Oliver Mackenzie called what he watched the “most impressive example of real-time game rendering” he has ever seen, and Richard Leadbetter described the achievement as “singular across the entire console generation”. Those two lines ran everywhere. The paragraph sitting a few lines under them did not.

It deals with how the picture is put back together for output. In the 26 minutes and 48 seconds captured on PlayStation 5, Digital Foundry reports no strong evidence of a modern temporal upscaler such as FSR 2 or TAA upscaling, and then writes this:

the image reads very much like a relatively straightforward spatial upscale […], bringing with it a degree of softness, visible geometric aliasing and shimmer on fine details. RT elements exacerbate this in places, with noisy, smeared reflections that can look worse than older screen-space solutions in some static comparisons.

The criticism has a boundary, and it is worth holding onto. In the same analysis, ray tracing carries the diffuse global illumination and the specular reflections on both opaque and transparent surfaces, while direct sunlight and the main shadows rest on conventional shadow maps with variable penumbra. The noise being described lives in the reflections, not in how the scene is lit.

Frame pacing is the part that draws no complaint. Digital Foundry reads a “relatively stable and well-paced 30FPS output, with only very occasional single frame drops”, which is a 33.3 millisecond budget held right through the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the video. The capture ran on a base PlayStation 5, not a PS5 Pro.

The 60fps wall is the CPU, not the GPU

Then comes the passage that commits the most about the game’s future, the one that prices a 60fps mode at 16.7 milliseconds per frame:

The evidence suggests that the game maintains its 33.3ms cadence with care, and Rockstar has clearly spent immense effort balancing CPU and GPU workloads to fully saturate the hardware. That makes a 60fps version extremely unlikely on console hardware, there’s no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work without compromising the world.

That is a processor argument, and the processor is exactly where the PS5 Pro has the least to give. Digital Foundry already said so on June 29, 2026: the most powerful console of the generation “only offers a fractional CPU performance bump over base PS5”, with its advantage coming from GPU horsepower, improved ray tracing acceleration and PSSR upscaling. “None of these features really shift the needle in terms of alleviating the CPU burden,” the same piece adds, which is why it puts a 30fps or 40fps mode on the PS5 Pro well ahead of a 60fps option.

History points the same way. GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 all shipped at 30 frames per second on console and often dipped under it. GTA V waited until the Expanded and Enhanced release of March 15, 2022 to get a 60fps console mode, 8 years and 6 months after the PS3 version. Red Dead Redemption 2 has never received one on current consoles.

So the number that keeps coming back is 40. It costs 25 milliseconds per frame, exactly halfway between the other two budgets, and it only pays off on a 120 Hz display, since 40 does not divide into 60. Rockstar Games has announced no graphics mode of any kind. The only thing on the record is Rob Nelson’s remark, reported on August 27, 2026, putting development builds at 30 frames per second on console while leaving a performance mode undecided.

Two figures credited to Digital Foundry that are not in Digital Foundry

On August 28, 2026, the French site Overclocking.com wrote that Digital Foundry had “already suggested” a precise rendering resolution, plus a much lower fallback definition to reach 60fps. Neither value appears in any Digital Foundry text found for this article. We are not repeating them.

A second gap deserves a slower reading than a verdict. On the same day, the German site playfront.de relayed an unverified claim from the CharlieIntel account: that the build shown to creators in July 2026 ran “at 4K 30FPS”, where Digital Foundry is measuring what the console draws before the image reaches the screen. Both statements can stand together. Neither of them comes from Rockstar.

Rockstar is where all of it stops. The studio has published no resolution figure, no list of graphics modes and no comparison between PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Nothing on its product page, on the PlayStation listing or on the Microsoft Store listing mentions HDR, Dolby Vision, VRR or 120 Hz output, and the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” badge on the PlayStation page has never been spelled out for this game. With 82 days left before November 19, 2026, and still no PC version announced, everything written about how GTA 6 renders comes from people watching a video.
