GTA 6 leaks: Rockstar's statement, and what it leaves out
Eight days after the first GTA 6 gameplay videos appeared online, Rockstar Games published a letter to its community on August 26, 2026. It acknowledges the leaks, holds the November 19, 2026 release date and sets up the Extended Look for the next day.

Rockstar Games acknowledged the leak of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay videos in a letter posted to its social channels on August 26, 2026, eight days after the first clips surfaced on August 18. The studio holds the November 19, 2026 release date, announces the Extended Look for the following day, and signs off “Sincerely, Rockstar Games.”
The sentence every outlet ran with on August 26 sits in the opening paragraph:
It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.
Two words in brackets carry everything the letter says about how finished GTA 6 actually is. Rockstar apologizes that things have taken as long as they have, “from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay”. There is no percentage, no milestone, no interim date, and no hint that anything has moved: the November 19, 2026 date is restated as it was.
What the letter withholds is the more interesting half. Rockstar names nobody. It does not say how many videos leaked, which ones it considers genuine, or which build they came from, and it offers no account of how the files left the company. No figure has been put on the damage. Nothing in the text describes a response of any kind, while clips kept appearing every day from August 18 to August 26, 2026, including a prologue sequence of more than four minutes that Kotaku covered on August 26, the same day the apology went up.
Even the posting itself is reported two ways. VGC places the statement on X; Engadget’s Kris Holt dates the Instagram version to 11:40 a.m. New York time on August 26. Neither says whether it went to both channels at once.
The last paragraph is a request and a thank-you. Rockstar writes that it hopes “everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19”, and tells the players who sent messages of support that “your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine”. The Extended Look landed the next afternoon, August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. New York time on Netflix, before going up on Rockstar’s YouTube channel.
