GTA 6 on Netflix first: Zelnick’s reasons, and the missing terms
Netflix premiered Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look six hours before YouTube on August 27, 2026. Strauss Zelnick gave two reasons for that order, then declined to put any number on the deal itself.
GTA6 LIFE

Netflix premiered “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” on August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET, six hours before the same video went up free on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and on the official GTA 6 site. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick gave two reasons for that order in an interview with Jason Schreier published by Bloomberg on August 7, 2026: the size of the audience Netflix reaches, and the value of turning the reveal into an event instead of another trailer upload. On the third question, the money, he said nothing at all. He would not say who paid whom.
He put a number on the first reason himself, to Variety, on that same August 7:
Last time I checked, I think Netflix had 200 million subscribers. I’m guessing all 200 million of them are going to be watching.
Variety corrected him inside its own article: Netflix reported more than 325 million subscribers at the end of 2025. The man selling the reach of the platform was short by over 125 million.
The second reason is about shape. Rockstar’s announcement of August 6, 2026 set a six-hour exclusivity window, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET. Netflix carried the video worldwide, on every plan, in 4K with a 5.1 mix and subtitles in thirteen languages, and described the deal as a “first-of-its-kind partnership”. On the earnings call of August 7, Zelnick chose his words: Netflix is “a great marketing partner for us and distribution partner”. Not a producer. Not an exclusive broadcaster.
The terms nobody has given
Neither Take-Two nor Netflix has disclosed the amount, the direction of the payment or the length of the agreement. That gap has sat in the middle of the story since August 6, and nothing has filled it. Sources cited by Variety say Netflix went after the deal because the service wants a place at big cultural moments, the same reasoning that took it into live sport. The two companies had history already: Netflix held the license for the GTA mobile ports and has a WWE 2K arrangement running.
With no contract to read, the counters are all anyone has. Sensor Tower, quoted by GamesBeat, measured what the broadcast did to Netflix usage on August 27.
| Sensor Tower measure | Change |
|---|---|
| Netflix users, broadcast hour against the hour before | +35% |
| Same hour, against the day before | +50% |
| Netflix audience on web browsers | +125% |
Those three figures come from an outside firm. Netflix has published no audience figure. On the Take-Two side, TTWO fell to $225.10 intraday on August 27, its low for the day, before closing at $233.00, then closed at $235.39 on August 28, the day Investing.com put the company’s market value at $44.3 billion. BTIG reiterated its Buy rating and a $313 target that same day, about 24% above the price, citing the reception the game got.

Six hours behind a subscription
The backlash started on the day of the announcement. Polygon reported on August 6 that part of the audience objected to an advertisement sitting behind a paid subscription, and the cheapest Netflix plan was listed at $8.99 a month by PCMag on August 27, 2026. Rockstar took some of the heat out of it the day before the broadcast, clearing creators to livestream and react from 3 p.m. ET while barring anyone from reposting the raw video in full without context or commentary.
The trade reads better against the trailer records. Trailer 2 drew 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours in May 2025, a figure supplied by Take-Two. For the Extended Look there is no equivalent number: the YouTube version passed 5 million views in the hours after it appeared, and it carries an age restriction that requires a signed-in account. Rockstar has published no 24-hour total.
What the night settled was not the reach of Netflix but its plumbing. Downdetector logged 3,129 Netflix reports at 2:49 p.m. ET, minutes before the start, and the service came through without a lasting outage, while Twitch went down about an hour in. None of the 26 minutes and 48 seconds is Netflix material: the footage is in-game, captured on PlayStation 5, and the closing card points at November 19, 2026.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick called the Extended Look the hors d’oeuvre, with the appetizers, the main course and dessert still ahead. He has not said where the main course gets served.
