GTA 6 ends a 13-year gap: every GTA game, dates and sales

The first Grand Theft Auto shipped in November 1997 on MS-DOS. Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, at the end of the longest gap the series has ever put between two mainline games.

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, 4,811 days after Grand Theft Auto V. Thirteen years and two months. Nothing in the series comes close.

The first Grand Theft Auto shipped in November 1997 on MS-DOS and Windows, made by DMA Design and published by BMG Interactive. Grand Theft Auto 2, in October 1999, is the first to carry the Rockstar Games label. DMA Design, founded in Dundee in 1988, became Rockstar North.

Eight mainline games, with North American release dates, launch platforms and the most recent sales figure published for each.

PC players used to wait less than a year. GTA III reached Windows on May 21, 2002, about seven months after the PS2 version; Vice City took six and a half, San Andreas seven and a half, GTA IV seven. GTA V took nineteen, on April 14, 2015. No PC version has been announced.

The gaps between mainline games stretched with every console generation, from the PlayStation 2 to the PS5.

Between Gap
GTA III and Vice City 1 year
Vice City and San Andreas 2 years
San Andreas and GTA IV 3 years, 6 months
GTA IV and GTA V 5 years, 5 months
GTA V and GTA VI 13 years, 2 months

Spin-offs covered part of the wait: London 1969 in April 1999, GTA Advance on Game Boy Advance in October 2004, built by Digital Eclipse, Liberty City Stories on PSP in October 2005, Vice City Stories on October 31, 2006, Chinatown Wars on Nintendo DS in March 2009.

Take-Two no longer publishes per game numbers for the back catalogue: the totals above for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV date from 2008 to 2013. Only the series total gets refreshed: more than 410 million units sold-in in December 2023, more than 440 million in May 2025, nearly 475 million in the investor presentation of August 2026. The Take-Two press release of June 24, 2026 still read “over 470 million” in its Rockstar boilerplate, which runs behind the financial documents. What GTA 6 will add is a separate question.

One game sits outside every catalogue. Vice City Stories, at 4.5 million copies in March 2008 and over 7 million by 2025, was pulled from the PlayStation Network on July 24, 2017 and left out of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, The Definitive Edition on November 11, 2021. Rockstar has announced neither a remaster nor a reissue.
