GTA 6 storage: the PS5 license badge adds $208 per terabyte

Rockstar Games has published no install size for GTA 6, so the one figure worth comparing before November 19, 2026 is the price of a terabyte. In the United States it ran from $162 to $462 in June 2026.

A terabyte of PS5 expansion storage cost between $162 and $462 in the United States in June 2026, and the gap turns on a badge rather than on speed. The low figure is a WD_Black SN850X 8 TB seen on Amazon at $1,299.99, reported by Notebookcheck on June 17. The high one is SanDisk’s catalogue price for the licensed Optimus GX PRO 850P 8 TB, $3,699.99, reported by The Verge and carried by jeuxvideo.com on June 22.

Drive US price Where the price comes from Per TB
WD_Black SN850X 8 TB $1,299.99 seen on Amazon, Notebookcheck, June 17, 2026 $162
SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P 8 TB $2,959.99 SanDisk announced price, June 22, 2026 $370
Optimus GX PRO 850P 4 TB $1,499.99 SanDisk announced price, June 22, 2026 $375
Optimus GX PRO 850P 2 TB $759.99 SanDisk announced price, June 22, 2026 $380
Optimus GX PRO 850P 1 TB $379.99 SanDisk announced price, June 22, 2026 $380
Optimus GX PRO 850P 8 TB $3,699.99 SanDisk catalogue price behind that cut $462

The right column is our own arithmetic, rounded to the dollar. The middle one matters as much: a price seen at one retailer on one day and a manufacturer announcement are two different kinds of number. The 8 TB appears twice because $2,959.99 was presented as a cut from $3,699.99.

At the same 8 TB, $370 against $162 leaves a premium of $208 per terabyte for the license, and Digital Foundry calls the SN850X comparable in specification and built by the same parent company. The badge buys no speed. Sony asks for an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 drive of 250 GB to 8 TB, sequential read of 5,500 MB/s recommended, with a heatsink no thicker than 11.25 mm. Any drive that clears the bar works, as Games.gg wrote on June 18, 2026, and Sony’s support page warns that no expansion drive matches the internal SSD on every game, even past 5,500 MB/s.

Xbox owners get no equivalent line. The Series X and Series S take only proprietary Xbox format cards, built by Seagate, WD_Black and SanDisk as of August 26, 2026 according to Netzwelt. That survey reads European retailers and quotes euros, and no US price for those cards was recorded for this page. Converting would invent one.

Microsoft wrote on June 25, 2026 that “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027”. Digital Foundry, cited by Rotek on June 18, put the same 8 TB SN850X at $600 a year earlier. That is $75 per terabyte, against $162 in June 2026.

How much storage you need works without an official install size, the trade between a roomier console and an add on drive sits in console prices, and the machine by machine read is in PS5 or Xbox Series X. GTA6 LIFE runs no affiliate links as of August 29, 2026.
