GTA 6 console prices: PS5 at $649.99, Series X at $799.99
Two console price rises landed four months apart in 2026, one from Sony and one from Microsoft. With 82 days left before GTA 6, the number on the box only means something read next to the ones it replaced.
GTA6 LIFE
A PS5 with a disc drive lists at $649.99 in the United States on August 29, 2026, and an Xbox Series X with a drive at $799.99, 82 days before Grand Theft Auto VI. Both are list prices, not readings taken at a store.
Sony announced a worldwide increase on March 27, 2026, effective April 2: $100 on each of its three consoles. Microsoft followed on June 25 for August 1, $100 on the 512 GB models and $150 on the 1 TB ones.

None of those is a starting point. VGC placed the Series X with a drive $300 above its November 2020 launch price, and TweakTown put the PS5 gap at $200 on July 31, 2026. August 1 was not a first move either: Microsoft had already raised US Xbox prices by $20 to $70 in October 2025.
Sony pointed the other way six weeks before its own rise. On February 19, 2026, chief financial officer Lin Tao said the company had secured enough memory to hold PS5 pricing steady across 2026, per Cowcotland. The increase was announced on March 27.
One route under list is named in the June 25 statement itself: certified refurbished consoles, up to $100 below the recommended price. The same text ends one, the Xbox Series X 2 TB Galaxy Black, discontinued that day.
Microsoft gives its reason in that statement: memory and storage prices “have increased by more than 2.5x”, with “another doubling by the fall of 2027” expected on machines “typically not sold at a profit”. Microsoft also names Grand Theft Auto VI there, calling the Series S “the lowest-cost way for console players to enjoy the biggest hits this year”.
One gap on that table buys nothing. The $50 between a PS5 Digital Edition and a PS5 with a drive, like the $50 between the two Series X, pays for a drive this game never reads: the box holds a download code, not a disc, and Rockstar says so on its product page.
